How to Have Wedding Day Makeup That is Flawless

In Advice, Bridesmaids Confess!, Professionals Confess!

My best friend Heather recently got married. As expected, I helped her in any way that I could. Besides the average bridesmaid duties, I helped her find both a photographer and a makeup artist (MUA) I met through Bridesmaids Confession. Because let’s face it, to preserve your wedding memories you need a photographer. To make sure you have wedding day makeup that is flawless, well you need a professional MUA.

I met Monica through a wedding photographer that frequently submits bridal showers to my site. Monica’s personality is so warm, she feels like an old friend from the first time you talk to her. We talked about doing an article on makeup sometime for the blog, and then life happened. Flash forward to a few months before Heather’s wedding and she was stressing out. She wanted to find an amazing makeup artist in NJ but was shell shocked by the quotes she was getting.

Based on the pricing she mentioned, I knew Monica’s rates are mid-range and her work is impeccable. I practically begged Heather to pick her when I found out Monica had her wedding date available! Thankfully it all worked out and I finally got to meet Monica in person. She’s just as nice as I expected, and a true professional. Plus we finally got to work on a blog post together.

Read on to find out more about Monica, her tips for wedding day makeup that is flawless, and to see pictures of her amazing work on myself and Heather.

Tell me about yourself and your business.

I’m Monica, the owner of Makeup by Monica, LLC. I’m based out of Branchburg, NJ and travel within the US.

Makeup artistry has always been my passion. Although I enjoyed practicing my craft on weekends with friends and family since I was a teenager, I held a full-time job in the brokerage industry until I had my children.  Two years ago I decided to turn my passion into a dream job and I officially opened my own business. It’s been the best decision I’ve ever made.

What are the advantages to a bride and her bridal party of having you come to them on wedding day?

Avoiding any kind of travel for the bridal party will create a less stressful morning. The bride can rest assure the day will run smoothly when we travel to their location. With some brides having large bridal parties, many times we have to start early. This is a huge advantage since most salons don’t open until later in the day.

What things should the bride and bridesmaids be doing to prep their skin for wedding day makeup?

Oh wow, the list can be quite long and that’s why I send out a skin prep email to the bridal party two weeks before their wedding.  I’m huge on skin prep and maintaining smooth, clear skin. It’s the best canvas any artist can have so makeup application goes on flawless.

A few key things you must do: stay hydrated, minimize, sugars, carbs and caffeine. Depending on the client’s skin, I always have tips on what moisturizers to use before bed and throughout the day. I recommend a gentle exfoliator once a week and then top it off with a good serum or moisturizer before bed. If you want to splurge, then I recommend a few facials before the big day.

What are some important things the bridal party needs to know to make things run smoothly on the wedding day?

Definitely good skin prep before, and absolutely zero makeup the day of. We work on a tight schedule. The more skin prep and removal of makeup from the night before we have to do, will only take up more time. It can delay scheduling for the rest of the girls.

Always bring a couple of lipsticks, a light and dark color of your choice. Have them ready to apply once we are done with your look. That same lipstick will be used for touch ups throughout the night.

What beauty product lines are in your makeup bag?

A few of my favorites are Dior, Makeup For Ever, MAC, RCMA, Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, Tarte, Nars, as for skin prep my go to every time is Sexapeel by Sonia Roselli and skin line by Tatcha. Those two never fail me.

Have you had any situations where it was like bridesmaids gone wild?

LOL! No not yet but I’m sure I will! So far everyone has been well behaved for the sake of the bride.

Have you ever been a bridesmaid? What was that experience like for you?

Yes I have been. I was very easy going and helped out in anything I could and I made sure the focus was all about her. That’s what our job is as a bridesmaid right? (Theresa Says: Absolutely!)

What’s your best advice for a new bridesmaid?

Being a bridesmaid is a huge responsibility and expense. Know that and prepare for it before you accept your role. This experience is something you and her will always cherish.

Anything else you want to share?

I always maintain a sanitary, well organized and full range kit customized for each wedding party.

You want to book your makeup artist and hairstylist early! I work with some great stylists, Makeup Artist and assistants so I have you covered with both makeup and hair. I’m currently booking 6 months to over a year in advance. Brides have so much to plan, but choosing an MUA & Stylist should be at the top of their list. I also recommend setting up a trial, booking it for a special occasion like engagement pictures, bridal shower etc will be a great time for it.

Having Monica as our MUA on Heather’s wedding day was essential to getting that flawless wedding day makeup look. I honestly have never felt prettier in my life. Well minus my own wedding day, but I totally went for a natural makeup that day. I told Monica that I wanted to look classic but to play up the drama.

I’m so casual with my daily look that it was fun to get really glam. I know Heather was extremely happy with her look as well. We also had the most amazing hairstylists in Melissa (@hair_by_melissaalbro) and Kim (@hair_by_kimsavarion). I highly recommend you check out all of their instagram pages!

Amazing makeup artist! Love seeing the before and afters. I did my own makeup and hair, but I was on a strict budget. I went with a natural look.

Thanks Misty! I totally understand being on a budget with your wedding. I know a lot of women who opt to do their own hair and makeup when they are in multiple weddings over a short period of time. Have to cut cost somewhere!
